Grace was only two years old and not living in the United States when her mother’s boyfriend poured a pan of boiling water on Grace’s head. Grace sustained third and fourth degree burns. Local hospital staff advised that Grace’s death was imminent if she didn’t get specialized care. Linda, Grace’s step-grandmother was determined to save Grace’s life. There were seemingly endless bureaucratic hurdles as the clock ticked. Linda prevailed and Grace was airlifted to Texas. After seven surgeries and two months in the ICU, Grace came home to Minnesota. This summer, Grace and Linda spent an incredible week in the beautiful north woods at Camp RED run by Firefighters for Healing. At age five, Grace was the youngest camper. Her long dark hair masked head scars that told the story of why she was at camp. At Camp RED, campers Realize Every Dream. This is a camp for young burn survivors, a place where their stories, emotional scars and physical scars could be shared and accepted. On just day 2 Linda reported witnessing subtle changes in Grace, “It’s been amazing seeing her here. I heard her and another camper talk about how each of them was burned. I overheard Grace say ‘I was burned by hot water.’ She’s never talked about her burn outside of the family. She’s grown in confidence and poise here. Camp wasn’t over and she was already telling me about plans to see her camp friends next year.” Camp RED is free to any child who was treated for a burn injury requiring skin grafting.
We encourage you to register your son/daughter ages 6 - 15 who was involved in the burn trauma. If you have further questions and would like more details on how to register or volunteer, please email info@campRED.org.
