In 2017 we provided Camp Scholarships
to children between 6 - 16 years old
who were impacted by a burn injury
or related injury or illness.
We'll be doing the same again in 2018.

Whether your camper was burned years ago or recently, you are all progressing through recovery and developmental changes and challenges. Camp RED is for burn survivors between 6 – 16 years of age who want to have the opportunity to live beyond the scars and to be kids. Our hope is that your time at Camp RED will help you Realize Every Dream for a better tomorrow! You and your camper will be surrounded by other families who have shared experiences, similar injuries, feelings, fears and concerns. Our volunteers want to support you, celebrate each camper and encourage their emotional healing. Camp RED offers a variety of active and passive activities in the most beautiful setting, including canoeing, archery, trust, swimming, boating, horseback riding and more. Campers will create new friendships and memories to last a lifetime. Firefighters for Healing has dreamed of running a camp for many years. This is now a reality made possible thanks to the generosity of sponsors, supporters, volunteers, family, friends and collaborators in the community.
Brooke Byrd – Executive Director
Brooke is the Executive Director and Chief Smile Officer. Brooke started her camp experience with the Girl Scouts, hoping to give back to an organization that inspired her youth. She graduated from the University of West Georgia with a Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education in 2002. While teaching second grade in Douglasville, Georgia, she earned her Master’s degree in Reading Instruction. Brooke has worked at Camp Knutson over the past 12 years and believes in the positive impact summer camp can have on everyone, especially children with special health concerns.
Dr. Jon Gayken – Medical Director
Dr. Gayken has a strong interest in both the acute and long term psychological outcomes affecting burn patients and their reintroduction into society. His interest in trauma/critical care surgery began while he was a surgical resident at Hennepin County Medical Center. He has found caring for patients who rely on safety net hospitals particularly rewarding and a special privilege.
Camp RED is free to any child who was treated for a burn injury requiring skin grafting. We encourage you to register your son/daughter ages 6 - 16 who was involved in the burn trauma. This year we are also inviting one adult/parent and/or one sibling (ages 6 - 15) to attend camp at no charge. Our website will have a Camp FAQ tab soon that we will update often right up until the day before camp starts. If your camper has a special medical need, please contact our office prior to registering to see if Camp RED would be a good fit for your camper. If you have further questions and would like more details on how to register, please email info@campRED.org
Seven years to the month after our first ever benefit,
we are so proud to open Camp RED.

Potential sponsors In this day of medical advances, a burn trauma leaves scars that are not only painful and long lasting but can be emotionally and mentally devastating. Burns leave scars that last a lifetime and may require several surgeries to completely heal and regain mobility. Firefighters for Healing provides financial and medical resources to burn survivors and their families year round. We are honored to endow the first children’s burn camp in Minnesota to promote self-esteem and lifelong confidence. Our collaborations and partnerships will forge new pathways for a holistic approach to recovery, prevention and education.
