TRANSITIONAL HEALING CENTER

FEATURES

In addition to housing the business offices for Firefighters for Healing, the Transitional Healing Center features 12 “home-away-from-home” suites for the families of burn survivors or firefighters/first responders who are being cared for at the Hennepin Healthcare Burn Center and other Twin Cities hospitals. We offer the following amenities:

  • Expansive outdoor terrace patio with dining and seating options

  • Community art, including a multi-wall mural

  • The Hennepin Healthcare Living Room complete with a reclaimed wooden table

  • Access to onsite underground parking

  • A spirited, youth-focused “Joy Room” created by Joy Collaborative and funded by Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union

  • Located one block from the Hennepin Healthcare Burn Center

  • A calm and peaceful environment to promote recovery and healing

Families who qualify for emergency housing are immediate family of a burn survivor or first responder, who is from/lives in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, or has been transported to Hennepin Healthcare’s Level 1 Burn Center. There is no limit to the amount of time families can utilize housing except that the patient needs to be in the hospital or in outpatient treatment and they need to abide by the Code of Conduct. This emergency housing offers not only a respite for families dealing with a traumatic situation but also significant financial relief.

Family Stories

“When a first responder has a medical diagnosis or a child or adult has sustained burn trauma, the family is forced into weeks or months of unique challenges. Our Transitional Healing Center will provide 24/7 relief for families by providing emergency housing and a wide range of support. I know firsthand the power of having family close by when you’re recovering in the hospital. We are thankful for the many community partners who helped to plan for, fund and furnish this space for our families. There isn’t anyone supporting burn survivor families in this way in the Midwest. Patients who have survived burn trauma have unique challenges and often a very lengthy recovery. Their families are often displaced for weeks, if not months. When any firefighter from Minnesota, Wisconsin or the Dakotas is sidelined by a line-of-duty injury or a medical diagnosis like cancer, heart issues or PTSD, we are here to provide relief and support. Firefighters For Healing works with community partners to meet the physical, emotional and financial needs of patients and their families. We show up with compassion, understanding and the ability to take action.”

- Jake LaFerriere, Founder and Executive Director of Firefighters For Healing
