Teaming Up with Alerus Mortgage
to Support Children’s
Burn Camp in Minnesota
Firefighters for Healing is pleased to announce Alerus Mortgage as the title sponsor for the 3rd annual Camp RED season. This is the first children’s burn camp in Minnesota for burn survivors and their families where we hope like the acronym, campers will Realize Every Dream. Camp RED gives burn survivors between the ages of 6-16 the opportunity to live beyond their scars and to be kids again.
“Whether the camper was burned recently or years ago, every survivor and their family is progressing through recovery with developmental changes and challenges. Our goal is to run a unique program for 4 days, where campers and their families feel supported by staff and other families who have shared experiences and similar injuries, feelings, fears and concerns,” said Founder Jake LaFerriere.
“It does not matter what state you live in or what hospital has provided your care, all are welcome at Camp RED. Our caring volunteers want to support each burn survivor and their caregivers, celebrate each camper and encourage emotional healing with a variety of outdoor activities in the most beautiful setting,” Brooke Byrd, Camp RED Executive Director.
The family of the burn-injured child faces the staggering prospect of immense investments of time, money and emotion – as they support their child. Firefighters for Healing comes to the aid of these families with the flexibility to support immediate family needs, whatever those needs may be.

Firefighters for Healing (firefightersforhealing.org) was established in 2010 after Minneapolis firefighter Jake LaFerriere suffered 3rd and 4th degree burns in a backdraft explosion while battling a house fire. It was at the hospital while being treated for his burns that Jake met young children who were undergoing the same painful treatment for their injuries. He wanted to do more. Jake founded Firefighters for Healing a 501(c)(3) non-profit with the mission of supporting burn survivors and firefighters.
